ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Biotechnology was initiated as a vocational course as a part of B.Sc Botany and Biotechnology degree course in the year 1998. M.Sc Biotechnology was introduced in the College in 2013. Since 2019, we commenced as a separate department in the College.
Our vision is to provide quality education in all spheres of Biotechnology with special thrust in Plant, Animal and Environmental Biotechnology and train the students so as to adapt to the international standards. Department is supported by DBT-Star college scheme-Skill Vigyan Programme. Our well committed and eligible faculties offer students an environment of excellent teaching, learning, mentoring and career guidance.
The department had the honour of producing 6 PG rank holders for past 7 years. UG course has also produced two rank holders since 1998 in the academic year 2019-2020. Average pass percentage is 75 percent for past 5 years. We offer three certificate courses such as Food Biotechnology, Microbial Techniques and Healthy Food Habits for the past 5 years. We practice ICT enabled teaching methods with power point presentations and videos, moreover remedial classes are offered for supporting slow learners. We organize seminars, workshops and invited lectures regularly from various institutions to orient students in special areas of Biotechnology. The entire cutting edge curriculum offers various job orientation sessions, internships as well as institutional visits as a routine part of our programme. Our faculties have 27 international publications and have participated in 45 seminars/workshops/conferences,1 article in proceedings, 6 Book Chapters in total. Our department has sound infrastructure facilities with adequate instrumentation for the smooth conduct of classes and practical sessions. We offer theme based extension activities to groom students in particular areas of Biotechnology which we consider as one among the best practices of our department. The department has 4 well equipped labs viz., Tissue Culture Lab, Microbiology Lab, UG Lab and PG Lab for UG and PG courses.
Along with the laboratory practices we have collaboration with CRMAS and Amrita Virtual lab faculty, where students can simulate experiments on screen and view animations of the experiments as well. There are two qualified permanent faculties in the department along with four guest lecturers. We had a total of 200 students in the past academic year. Students also actively participate in youth festivals, sports, NCC and NSS and many have won prizes.
