Sanskrit is the oldest and living language on our planet.. It is the language of the most ancient Indian scriptures belonging to various faiths. Mahatma Gandhi said ‘Without the study of Sanskrit one cannot become a true Indian and a true learned man’.
In Sree Narayana College Kollam, Sanskrit language included as the subsidiary and second language of various courses in 1955. Initially it had no separate department but attached to the Department of Malayalam and taught as subsidiary subject for Graduation and Post- Graduation courses of English, Hindi and Malayalam and also as second language to Pre-Degree, BA and BSc. Shri. N. Damodaran Nair, a great scholar was the first Sanskrit Lecturer in the College. He served as the Lecturer up to June 1957. Subsequently, a galaxy of eminent scholars served the Department and won high credit and reputation for themselves and the institution by their single minded devotion to the pursuit of learning and imparting knowledge. Among them, names of the eminent writers such as Dr.T.Bhaskaran, Dr.K.Vijayan, Prof.V.V.Nanoo, Prof.K.V.Dev, Prof.K.Devadas deserve special mention. Due to the increase in strength of students to study Sanskrit, College authorities decided to separate Sanskrit course from Malayalam Department and Department of Sanskrit came into existence in the year1980. Prof. K.V.Dev was the first HOD.
