Year of Establishment : 1948
The Department of Economics was started in the year 1949. Prior to this, it was combined with other social sciences like History and Politics. Since its establishment, a number of eminent personalities have worked in the department. In the initial years, Dr. P.C Alexander was a faculty of the Department who later on entered the IAS and also served as Governor of Tamil Nadu and as Governor of Maharashtra. He also became the member of Rajya Sabha representing Maharashtra.
Renowned economist Prof Mathew Tharakan was the first Head of Department. He also acted as the economic advisor to Sri C Kesavan, Chief Minister of Travancore-Cochin State. He was appointed as the chairman of the Coir Minimum Wages Committee in 1951-52 and also as the Chairman of the Industrialization Committee for the Coastal areas of Alleppey district in 1964. Eminent personalities who later on served the department during various periods include Prof K.P.Govindan, Prof Sam Kurien, Prof N Sathy, Prof Krishna Warrior, and Prof G Narendra Babu etc.
Till 1958, the department offered only BA degree. MA course was started in the year 1959 and with this the department was elevated to the status of a Post-Graduate Department. Semester system is being followed at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. The department offers complementary courses such as Political Science, Indian History/ Mathematical Economics at the UG level. Two sets of optional papers such as Agriculture, Welfare, Industry and Labour Economics are offered at the PG level, which is a rare opportunity for the students under Kerala University. The department has considerable student strength and has produced good results and several ranks at the university level.
